Important Information
for all those planning to visit the United States
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO - IS YOUR PASSPORT FIT FOR TRAVEL TO THE USA?
(02/09/03)
We estimate that British Nationals will make 4 million trips to the USA
this year. Do you have the right travel documents? Currently, British
visitors to the USA do not need a visa under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP)
but the rules are about to change.
From 1 October 2003 everyone, including children, travelling to the USA
under the VWP must have their own machine-readable passport. Anyone
without their own machine-readable passport, including children who are
currently on a parent's passport, will need a visa to travel to the USA.
How do you know if your passport is machine-readable? It's easy to check -
there are two lines of text printed on the white stripe at the bottom of
the personal information page. Baroness Symons, Foreign Office Minister
for Consular Affairs said: 'If you're planning to travel to the States
soon, perhaps to enjoy the Florida sunshine in the autumn half term
holiday, check that your passport is machine-readable, and that your
children have their own passports. We have been issuing children with
their own passports since 1998, but we estimate that up to four million
under-16 year-olds are still travelling on a parent’s passport. After 1
October they'll need their own passport to enter the States.'
'The key to having a trouble-free holiday is to know before you go. So
take time to check you have the right and valid travel documents and, if
necessary, apply in good time for a new passport. If you don't, your
holiday could be over before it's even started.'
All British Passports issued in the UK, and the vast majority of those
issued at British Missions overseas, are machine-readable. By the end of
2003 all full British passports issued overseas will be machine-readable.
In the intervening time we have made arrangements for all passport
applications received in Posts currently not able to issue
machine-readable passports to be processed in the UK or at the nearest
Mission with machine-readable equipment.
We estimate that 200,000 people currently hold non machine-readable
passports. A British passport is machine-readable when the white strip at
the foot of the personal data page (at the back of the passport) bears two
lines of print. If there is no white strip, or the white strip is blank,
the passport is not machine-readable.
